SmogHog SHN Electrostatic Mist Collector

One machine mount was not enough. The SHN is the family you move to when the mist is coming off several machines, or off one big one, and it will hang from the ceiling, sit on a wall, mount to the machine, or take a duct, depending on what your bay allows.

A two stage precipitator you can hang almost anywhere

Mist draws through a reusable aluminum mesh prefilter, then an ionizer that charges what is left, then onto grounded collection plates, then out through an afterfilter. Nothing in that path is a consumable. The cells wash and go back in.

Parker builds the SHN to be ducted or unducted, ceiling hung, wall mounted, or machine mounted with a kit. That flexibility is the reason this family is the widest in the SmogHog line, and the reason the price list carries 1,026 orderable configurations of it.

What you are really buying is a very low consumable bill in exchange for a wash schedule somebody has to keep. That trade is the whole conversation, and it should happen before a model number does.

The models

Three sizes, and then what you do to them

Parker publishes seventeen SHN model designations. Underneath they are three cell sizes, at roughly 1,000, 2,000 and 4,000 CFM, with suffixes for higher static pressure, tandem passes, and the T shape.

Read the suffixes and the list gets short. Parker’s key: M is multiple-pass or tandem, HM is high static multiple-pass, T is the T-shape configuration, and XB comes with no blower for when you are supplying your own fan or ducting into an existing system. H is the higher horsepower build at the same airflow, which is what you want when the duct run is long enough to cost you static pressure.

The M models weigh roughly half again as much. Compare SHN-40 at 680 lbs against SHN-40-M at 1,024. That is a second collection stage, and it is worth checking against your roof structure before the order rather than after. Parker is specific about hanging: the 10 and 20 can be chain hung with welded link chain of 2,000 lb test strength or better, but the SHN-40 and SHN-50 are suspended by rods and are not approved for chain.

Parker’s order code is positional, and each character is a real choice about your installation. This is what sits behind that 1,026 figure, and it is why an SHN quote should name every position rather than a model alone.

SHN111-XANX1L reads as height 1, width 1, single pass, no inlet plenum, 1 inch aluminum mesh prefilter, no blower, no motor, 115/1/60, left to right. Parker’s owner’s manual lists a wider voltage set across the family, including 50 Hz builds at 115/1/50, 220/3/50 and 400/3/50, and 575/3/60. If you are shipping this overseas or you have 575 in the building, say so and we will confirm the build with the factory.

Airflow direction is not a detail. Left to right and right to left are different units, not a field adjustment. Get it wrong and the inlet faces the wall. It is the single most common thing to fix on a submittal, so we ask which way the duct comes in before anything else.

Media and filtration

Single pass or double pass is the efficiency decision

Parker publishes it at the family level: a single pass SmogHog ESP removes up to 95% of 0.3 micron particles, with that 95% independently verified in accordance with EN 1822-5. A double pass configuration takes overall removal to over 97%. Where the air comes back into the plant, Parker cites recirculation efficiencies up to 99%.

The stages themselves are simple and mostly reusable. Prefilter and afterfilter are heavy duty industrial aluminum mesh, reusable, and there to spread the air evenly across the cells as much as to catch anything. A 2 inch Mist-Stop coalescing prefilter is available where the mist load is heavy enough to be worth intercepting before it reaches the plates.

On the discharge side Parker offers 95% DOP or HEPA afterfilters, plus odor control modules. Parker also notes optional filter modules can raise filtration efficiency up to 99.99% on select units. If your air returns to a space where people are working all shift, that option list is where the conversation goes.

Inlet, outlet and side discharge plenums are published accessories, and an oil impingement inlet is available where the load is genuinely oily rather than water based.

Cleaning and ownership

The wash is the deal you are making

How the cells get cleaned

Parker’s SHN manual calls for washing in a hot detergent soak tank, an automatic parts washer, or with a portable pressure washer. Wash water temperature is 130 to 150 degrees F and should not exceed 160.

The detergent should be alkaline with a built in buffering agent, which is there to protect the aluminum. Parker gives 20 to 1 as a starting concentration. Do not mix caustic and alkaline detergents, and use nonflammable cleaners.

Everything has to be dry before the unit runs again. A wet cell is a dead short, and that is the most common way a good collector comes back reading as broken.

How often

Parker publishes no interval for the SHN. The manual says normal maintenance is confined to periodic cleaning of the ionizer, cell and filters, and leaves the frequency to the process.

That is honest rather than evasive. A unit over a screw machine running straight oil all shift is on a different schedule than one over a lathe that runs twice a week. What we do instead of quoting a number is set the first interval from your hours and your coolant, then adjust it after the first two washes.

The thing worth saying plainly: if nobody owns that schedule, this is the wrong family and the media side of the line will serve you better. We would rather sell you the machine your crew will actually keep running.

Drains and what you supply. All SHN units come with a 1.5 inch FPT drain. If you are collecting dry material the drains get plugged. If contaminant will run off the components, Parker calls for a 1.5 inch drain trap, with the main drain line sloped, 1.5 inch diameter, and vented. Parker also expects the power switch and any fused disconnect to be supplied by the customer, so those go on our quote rather than turning up as a surprise at install.

A hard boundary

Charged plates and combustible material do not go together

Parker’s SHN manual is direct about it: do not operate this equipment in the presence of combustible vapors or gases, do not use in explosive atmospheres, do not collect emissions which are explosive, and keep flammable materials and vapors such as gasoline away from the unit. We repeat that here rather than softening it.

Parker’s manual also carries a combustible dust notice requiring the owner or user to perform a dust hazard analysis per NFPA standards and to engage certified professionals for testing and design review before installation in a combustible dust environment.

NFPA 660 took effect January 1, 2026 and consolidated NFPA 61, 484, 652, 654, 655, and 664. NFPA 68 for venting and NFPA 69 for explosion prevention remain separate referenced standards. Your dust hazard analysis has to be reviewed at least every five years and whenever the process changes.

If any part of your process makes combustible dust, that process needs a dust collector engineered for it rather than a mist collector doing double duty. Metal grinding sits in this category more often than shops expect, and aluminum, magnesium, titanium and zirconium go to wet collection under NFPA 660’s stated preference.

What it is built for

Processes Parker names for the SHN

Brazing, casting, cold forming, flame cutting, forging, gear cutting, heat treating, induction heating, lathes, plastic and rubber forming, quenching, screw machining, soldering, threading, vacuum pumps, welding, wet grinding, and wire drawing.

That list is longer and more varied than the machine mount line’s, and it tells you something: the SHN is the one Parker points at processes that are not simply a CNC enclosure. Forging, quenching and heat treating are heat driven rather than coolant driven, and they need a collector that can be hung above the process rather than bolted to it.

On our floors it lands most often in machining, tooling and CNC where several machines feed one unit, in welding and metal fabrication on oily or coated stock, and in plastics manufacturing, which is one of Parker’s own named applications.

When the SHN is not right for you

Nobody is going to wash the cells

Parker publishes no interval, which means the schedule is yours to own. An electrostatic collector that never gets cleaned is an expensive fan. If your PM program is already stretched, the media side of the line asks less of your crew and we will price that instead.

One machine is the whole problem

If the mist is coming off a single CNC enclosure, an SHN hung above it is more machine and more installation than the job needs. The MSH machine mount sits on the machine, runs on single phase, and costs a fraction of the install.

You need more than about 5,500 CFM

The SHN tops out in that range. Above it you are looking at the SGN unicell, which runs from 2,200 up to 9,000 CFM and gets there without multiplying cabinets. See the SmogHog line page.

Your contaminant is dry dust

Grinding, sanding, sawing and dry cutting are dust collector work, and a precipitator sized for aerosol is the wrong machine. See the Parker DustHog line.

Your roof will not take it

An SHN-40-M is over a thousand pounds hanging from your structure, and Parker does not approve chain hanging above the 20. If the building will not carry it, that is a real constraint and it is better found now. We check it during the assessment rather than at the lift.

SHN questions

How much air does the SHN move?

From 1,000 CFM on the smallest build up to about 5,500 on the largest. Parker publishes it as a range per model rather than a single figure, because where you land inside it depends on your static pressure and how the unit is ducted.

Can it be ceiling hung?

Yes, and that is the usual install. Parker allows chain hanging on the SHN-10 and SHN-20 with welded link chain of 2,000 lb test strength or better. The SHN-40 and SHN-50 are suspended by threaded rod and are not approved for chain. Plan for 36 inches of door swing and 18 inches above the electrical junction box.

Can I mount it to the machine instead?

Yes. Parker offers a machine mount kit and lists it as SHN only within the ambient families. It can also be wall mounted, ducted, or run unducted as an ambient unit, which is the flexibility that makes this family so wide.

What do I have to supply?

Parker expects the power switch and any fused disconnect switch to be supplied by the customer. If contaminant will run off the components you also need a 1.5 inch drain trap, with the main drain line sloped, 1.5 inch diameter and vented. We put those on the quote so they are priced rather than discovered.
