How much CFM does a portable fume extractor need for welding?
For single-torch MIG or stick welding with a source capture arm positioned 6–10 inches from the arc, 400–700 CFM at the hood is typically sufficient. Capture efficiency drops sharply beyond 12 inches. For heavier applications like grinding or flux-core welding, 1,000–1,500 CFM provides better capture. When should I use a portable versus a central dust collection system?
Portable extractors work best for 1–3 workstations, changing work locations, maintenance and repair operations, school environments, and facilities where ductwork installation isn’t practical. Once you have 4 or more fixed workstations, a central cartridge dust collector with ductwork is almost always more cost-effective in the long run.
