How It Works

How an Industrial Dust Collection System Works

A dust collector is one part of a system. Whether yours holds up on the floor depends on how the whole thing is engineered — from the hood at your process to the clean air leaving the fan.

It starts at the source. A hood, arm, or pickup captures your dust the instant it’s generated — at the weld, the grinder, the cutting table. Capture velocity has to be high enough at that point to pull dust in before it escapes into the room, and that target changes with your process.

Ductwork carries it. Your dust then travels through ducting to the collector, and it has to keep moving the whole way. That means holding transport velocity — generally 3,500 to 4,500 feet per minute, and higher for heavy or metallic dust. Drop below it and particles settle in the duct, build up, and choke airflow. Duct that’s sized by eye instead of by your CFM is one of the most common reasons a system underperforms.

The collector separates it. Inside the unit, your dust-laden air passes through the media your dust calls for — pleated cartridges, fabric bags, or a water bath — which pulls particulate down to a fraction of a micron. A pulse-jet or comparable cleaning cycle keeps the media from blinding off so airflow stays steady over time.

The fan has to overcome all of it. Every foot of duct, every elbow, and the loaded filter add up to total static pressure, and your fan has to be sized to beat it. Get this wrong and the airflow on the floor never matches the spec sheet — the unit looks right on paper and falls short in the building.
