Choosing the Right MERV Rating for Your Application

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures what particle sizes a filter captures. Higher MERV = finer filtration, higher initial resistance. The right rating depends on your dust type and where the filter sits in your system.

MERV 8 General pre-filtration, makeup air

Captures pollen, dust mites, and coarse industrial particulate above 3 microns. Common as a first-stage pre-filter upstream of cartridge or HEPA elements. Low resistance — good where energy cost is the priority.

MERV 11 Fine dust, mold spores, welding fume pre-filter

Captures particles down to 1 micron. Widely used in industrial welding and metal fabrication as a pre-filter stage before higher-efficiency downstream elements.

MERV 13 Pharmaceutical, food processing, superior IAQ

Captures submicron particles including fine powder and smoke aerosol. Required in many pharmaceutical and food and supplement manufacturing environments. Balances high efficiency with manageable pressure drop.

MERV 16 Cleanroom pre-filtration, semiconductor, battery manufacturing

Honest Fit Check

When a Pleated Panel Is NOT the Right Filter

Your application involves combustible metal dust (aluminum, magnesium, titanium). Pleated panels are not rated for explosive dust — the collector design and filter media both need to be specified for deflagration resistance. See our explosion protection assessments.
You’re handling sticky or hygroscopic materials (wet wood chips, certain food powders). These blind pleated media rapidly and don’t shake off during pulse cleaning. A woven bag or cartridge with surface-treatment coating is usually better.
Your collector generates extremely high dust loads continuously. If you’re handling fine, heavy dust streams above roughly 5 grains/ACFM, pleated panels may blind faster than the economics justify — a pulse-jet cartridge collector with high-surface-area cartridges is likely the right call.
You need final-stage HEPA performance. MERV 16 is near-HEPA but not a certified HEPA replacement. For pharmaceutical or cleanroom final filtration, use a certified HEPA filter.

How often should industrial pleated filters be changed?

Replace when differential pressure reaches the manufacturer’s upper limit — typically 1.0″ w.g. for MERV 8 pre-filters, up to 1.5–2.0″ for higher MERV stages. In practice, most industrial applications land on a 3–6 month replacement cycle, but the pressure gauge reading is the real trigger. Can you match OEM pleated filter specifications?

Yes. Give us the manufacturer, model, and part number and we’ll cross-reference it to an aftermarket equivalent that meets or exceeds the original specification. What’s the difference between a pleated filter and a cartridge filter?

A pleated panel filter is flat — it installs in a standard filter rack or housing. A cartridge filter is cylindrical with pleated media wrapped around a core — it installs in a dedicated cartridge collector tubesheet. Both use pleated media to maximize surface area, but they’re not interchangeable. If you’re not sure which your collector uses, give us the model number and we’ll sort it out.

Are pleated filters NFPA 660 compliant for combustible dust applications?

It depends on the application and the specific filter construction. Under NFPA 660, the filter media and housing must be compatible with the dust hazard class identified in your dust hazard analysis (DHA). For combustible dust applications, we’ll specify filters that meet the requirements — don’t assume a standard pleated panel is compliant without verifying against your DHA results.
