Trane Rooftop Filter Sizes by Model

Your Trane rooftop takes a specific filter size and count, and that number sits in a product catalog nobody on the crew has open on the roof. Find your unit below, see what it takes, see what a full changeout costs, and order the cases in one step.

Find your unit

Match the model on your unit’s nameplate to the left column. The first characters of the model number are enough. “Per changeout” is the cost of one full set for one unit at the per filter case price.

Sizes are nominal. IntelliPak units with final filter cartridges also take 12 inch cartridges in addition to the panels shown. Send us your model number and we will quote those.

Ordering your filters: your HVAC filters ship direct from the factory in bulk, so HVAC orders have a $650 minimum. Mix any sizes and MERV ratings to reach it, and shipping is free. See every size we carry on our full HVAC filter list.

Which MERV should you run?

Trane ships these units with throwaway filters as standard and offers 2 inch MERV 8 and MERV 13 as factory options on Precedent. That tells you the rack can take either one. Which one fits your building depends on the job:

MERV 8 keeps dust off the coil. Right for warehouses, shops and any rack where the dust load would blind a finer filter early.
MERV 10/8A catches more of the fine dust that loads a coil, with lower resistance than MERV 13. The galvanized wire back holds the pleats in shape at full airflow.
MERV 13 is the indoor air quality filter. Use it when you have a written MERV 13 requirement, and take a static pressure reading before you switch.

The short guide to MERV 8 vs. MERV 13 walks through what your air handler can take. You can also browse every HVAC pleated filter we carry, or go straight to MERV 10/8A.

Common questions

How many filters does a Trane Voyager 40 or 50 ton unit take?

Trane's Voyager 3 catalog lists 17 filters, 16 x 20 x 2, for the 40 and 50 ton units, and 16 of the same size for the 27.5, 30 and 35 ton units.

What size filter does a Trane Precedent YHC120 take?

Trane's catalog lists three 20 x 25 x 2 filters plus two 20 x 30 x 2 filters for the 10 ton T/YHC120F. The 6 to 8.5 ton T/YHC units take four 20 x 25 x 2.

Can a Trane Precedent run MERV 13 filters?

Yes. Trane offers 2 inch MERV 13 filters as a factory or field installed option on Precedent units. Take a static pressure reading before you switch, because MERV 13 moves less air than MERV 8 through the same rack.

What filter comes in a Trane rooftop unit from the factory?

Trane's catalogs list throwaway filters as the standard furnished filter, with 2 inch MERV 8 and MERV 13 offered as options on Precedent and MERV 8 and MERV 14 options on IntelliPak.

Are these the same filters Trane sells?

The DP Max MX40 MERV 10/8A filters on this page are the same Parker line sold through Trane's own parts network. We are a Parker dealer, not a Trane dealer, and we are not affiliated with Trane.

How often should I change the filters in a Trane rooftop unit?

Change them on measured pressure drop, not a calendar date. Parker recommends changing its DP MERV 10/8A pleats at 1.00 in. w.g. final resistance. Many buildings land on a 60 to 90 day schedule once they have a few readings.
