Hanging Fume Arms — Mount Overhead, Keep the Bench Clear

Your bench surface stays clear when the fume arm comes down from above. Hanging fume arms mount to the ceiling or wall, then articulate down to the breathing zone. Pick your diameter to match your collector CFM and your length to match the drop from mount to work.

What These Are

A ceiling or wall mount fume arm that drops down to the work.

Hanging fume arms mount to a ceiling joist or wall plate. The arm hangs down from the bracket, then articulates over and down to position the capture hood within 6-12 inches of the weld puddle. Friction joints hold the arm wherever you put it — no spring tension fighting the welder, no tubes blocking your bench surface, no floor cables to trip over.

Pick a hanging arm if

Your shop has 12+ feet of ceiling clearance · You want the bench surface fully clear · Multiple welders share a station and need the arm out of the way between uses · You’re running ductwork through the ceiling rather than along the floor.

Buyers most often need: 6″×10′ for general welding fab with 14-foot ceilings, 8″×10′ for stainless production with high CFM, 4″×8′ for trade school stations with extended drop length.

Sizing Guide

Pick the diameter to match your collector CFM.

The arm diameter sets the airflow capacity. Use this table to match the right arm to your collector’s CFM rating. If your collector pulls more than the arm can deliver, you’ll choke the system. If less, you’ll waste airflow.

Arm DiameterHood SizeRecommended CFMBest For
3″8″ hood80 – 120 CFMLight benchtop work, soldering, small TIG welding
4″10″ hood200 – 275 CFMTrade school stations, light MIG welding, hobby fab
6″13″ hood750 – 900 CFMGeneral production welding, MFE-750 mobile units, single-station fab
8″14″ hood1,200 – 1,500 CFMHeavy plate, stainless production, MFE-1350-SC mobile units

For length: measure from your ceiling or wall mount point down to the work surface. The arm length should equal that distance plus 2-3 feet for articulation. 3′ for low ceilings or wall mounts close to the bench, 5′ for standard 10-foot ceilings, 7′ for 12-foot ceilings, 8′ for unique long-drop applications, 10′ for 14-foot ceilings, 14′ for very tall industrial spaces.

Compatibility

Works with any collector pulling the right CFM.

Central Cartridge Collectors

Hanging arms are the natural choice for central cartridge systems where ductwork runs overhead. Each drop should match the duct CFM at that drop. See our cartridge collectors.

ICAP Mobile Units

Mobile units typically use standing arms (bundled), but you can swap to a hanging arm if your shop layout calls for overhead capture. The 6″ arms work with the MFE-750, 8″ with the MFE-1350-SC.

Existing Third-Party Units

Works with any collector pulling the right CFM and using a compatible duct connection. Donaldson, Camfil, Imperial Systems, and similar units use standard interfaces. Call us at 602-456-9661 to verify fit before you order.

When This Is NOT Right For You

When a different arm style fits your shop better.

Pick a different arm style if any of these match your shop.

  • You can’t mount to the ceiling or wall. Use standing fume arms. They mount to a workbench surface or floor base plate — no overhead structure required.
  • Your ceiling is below 10 feet. Hanging arms need vertical clearance for the arm to drop and articulate. With a low ceiling, a standing arm or wall-mount setup gives you better positioning.
  • Your welder needs to extend reach beyond a fixed length. Use a telescopic fume arm. Outer tube slides on the inner tube to extend reach without changing the mount position.
  • You’re welding food-grade, pharmaceutical, or USDA-regulated work. Use a stainless steel fume arm. Galvanized steel isn’t approved for food/pharma facilities. Stainless meets that requirement and stands up to washdown protocols.
  • Your hose temperature exceeds 260°F intermittent. The standard black hose isn’t rated for higher temperatures. Spec the HT500 hose upgrade for plasma cutting or hot-process applications — call us at 602-456-9661.
  • You’re capturing combustible dust (aluminum, magnesium, titanium). A standard fume arm isn’t rated for combustible dust. You need NFPA 660 compliant ductwork and a wet collector or baghouse with explosion protection. Book a compliance assessment first.
  • You don’t have a dust collector yet. An arm by itself doesn’t capture anything — you need a collector pulling air through it. See our cost guide or browse mobile units that include the arm bundled.
FAQ

Real questions buyers ask before placing an order.

Which diameter should I pick?

Match the arm diameter to your collector’s CFM. 3″ handles 80-120 CFM (light benchtop), 4″ handles 200-275 CFM (trade school), 6″ handles 750-900 CFM (general production), and 8″ handles 1,200-1,500 CFM (heavy production). If your collector pulls more than the arm capacity, you’ll restrict airflow and damage performance. If less, you waste capture velocity at the hood.

How do I figure out the right length?

Measure from your ceiling or wall mount point down to the work surface where the hood needs to sit. Add 2-3 feet for articulation movement. So a 12-foot ceiling with a 3-foot bench means 9 feet of drop plus 2-3 feet articulation = pick the 10′ or 14′ arm. Standard correlations: 10′ ceiling = 3′ arm, 12′ ceiling = 7′ arm, 14′ ceiling = 10′ arm, 16+ foot ceiling = 14′ arm.

What ceiling height do I need?

Minimum 10 feet for a 3′ or 5′ arm, 12+ feet for a 7′ arm, 14+ feet for a 10′ arm. The arm needs to articulate freely without bumping into the welder’s head or the work area when raised. If your ceiling is below 10 feet, the standing arm is a better fit.

Does the hanging arm come with mounting hardware?

Yes. Every hanging arm ships with the ceiling or wall mount bracket and standard hardware included. The bracket is designed to bolt to a structural ceiling joist (10″ deep minimum) or to a wall stud. For mounting to suspended ceilings or unusual surfaces, you’ll need to add a structural backing plate — we can recommend mounting kits if needed.

What hood diameter comes with each arm size?

Hood size matches the arm diameter for proper capture velocity. 3″ arm = 8″ hood, 4″ arm = 10″ hood, 6″ arm = 13″ hood, 8″ arm = 14″ hood. The hood is integrated with the damper and grab handle, all aluminum with black powder coat finish. Hoods are not interchangeable between arm diameters.

Why is there an 8′ length on hanging but not standing?

Hanging arms have unique drop-length needs because they’re sized to ceiling height. The 4″×8′ configuration covers shops with 11-12 foot ceilings where neither 5′ nor 10′ is quite right. Standing arms don’t have this need because they always start from the bench, not the ceiling.

Why isn’t a 5″ diameter listed?

5″ diameter arms have been discontinued by the manufacturer across all mount styles — standing, hanging, telescopic, and stainless. The 6″ diameter is the closest replacement (handles 750-900 CFM vs the older 5″ at 400-500 CFM). For lower CFM applications, use the 4″ diameter.
