Your welding station needs source capture that doesn’t get in the welder’s way. Standing fume arms mount to the bench or floor, stand straight up, then articulate down to the breathing zone. Pick your diameter to match your collector CFM, your length to match your reach.
A self-supporting fume capture arm for fixed welding stations.
Standing fume arms mount onto a workbench or directly to the floor with a base plate. The arm rises straight up from the mount, then articulates over and down to position the hood within 6-12 inches of the weld puddle. Friction joints hold the arm wherever you put it — no spring tension fighting the welder. The hood pulls air at the breathing zone before fume reaches the welder’s lungs.

The arm diameter sets the airflow capacity. Use this table to match the right arm to your collector’s CFM rating. If your collector pulls more than the arm can deliver, you’ll choke the system. If less, you’ll waste airflow.

For length: 3′ for benchtop work, 5′ for standard work cells, 7′ for fixed weld stations with reach, 10′ for wide bays where the anchor sits well off to the side, 14′ for very large fabrications. Longer arms give you more reach but cost more — pick the shortest length that comfortably reaches your work.

When a different arm style fits your shop better.
Pick a different arm style if any of these match your shop.
- You’re mounting to a wall or ceiling, not the bench. Use hanging fume arms. They mount overhead and drop down to the work, which keeps the bench surface clear.
- Your welder needs to extend reach beyond a fixed arm length. Use a telescopic fume arm. The outer tube slides on the inner tube to extend reach without changing the mount position.
- You’re welding food-grade, pharmaceutical, or USDA-regulated work. Use a stainless steel fume arm. Galvanized steel on the standard arms isn’t approved for food/pharma facilities. Stainless meets that requirement and stands up to washdown protocols.
- Your hose temperature exceeds 260°F intermittent. The standard black hose isn’t rated for higher temperatures. Spec the HT500 hose upgrade for plasma cutting or hot-process applications — call us at 602-456-9661.
- You’re capturing combustible dust (aluminum, magnesium, titanium). A standard fume arm isn’t rated for combustible dust applications. You need NFPA 660 compliant ductwork and a wet collector or baghouse with explosion protection. Book a compliance assessment first.

Which diameter should I pick?
Match the arm diameter to your collector’s CFM. 3″ handles 80-120 CFM (light benchtop), 4″ handles 200-275 CFM (trade school), 6″ handles 750-900 CFM (general production), and 8″ handles 1,200-1,500 CFM (heavy production). If your collector pulls more than the arm capacity, you’ll restrict airflow and damage performance. If it pulls less, you waste capture velocity at the hood.
Which length should I pick?
Pick the shortest length that comfortably reaches your work area. 3′ for benchtop, 5′ for standard work cells, 7′ for fixed weld stations with some reach needed, 10′ for wide bays, 14′ for very large fabrications where the mount sits well off to the side. Longer arms cost more and weigh more — don’t over-buy.
Does the arm come with a base or mounting hardware?
Yes. Every standing arm ships with the mounting bracket included. Bolt the bracket to your workbench surface or to a floor base plate (also included), then drop the arm tube into the bracket and tighten. No additional hardware needed unless you’re mounting to an unusual surface like sheet metal or thin tabletop — in which case you’ll want backing plates or rivnuts.
What hood diameter comes with each arm size?
Hood size matches the arm diameter for proper capture velocity. 3″ arm = 8″ hood, 4″ arm = 10″ hood, 6″ arm = 13″ hood, 8″ arm = 14″ hood. The hood is integrated with the damper and grab handle, all aluminum with black powder coat finish. Hoods are not interchangeable between arm diameters.
Can I use this with my existing collector from another brand?
Yes — these arms work with any collector that pulls the right CFM range and has a compatible duct connection. Donaldson, Camfil, Imperial Systems, and similar units use standard interfaces. The arm connects via flex hose with a worm-drive clamp on each end, which fits 3″-8″ diameter ducts. Call us at 602-456-9661 if you want to verify fit before ordering.
Why isn’t a 5″ diameter listed?
5″ diameter standing arms have been discontinued by the manufacturer. If you previously specified a 5″ arm, the 6″ diameter is the closest replacement (handles 750-900 CFM vs the older 5″ at 400-500 CFM). For applications that need closer to 400-500 CFM, use the 4″ diameter arm (200-275 CFM range) and verify your collector can match.
What hose temperature rating do the arms have?
Standard hose is rated 195°F continuous and 260°F intermittent — covers nearly all welding applications including MIG, TIG, stick, and most plasma cutting. For hotter applications like high-temp plasma, oxy-fuel cutting, or anywhere you’ll be pulling fume above 260°F intermittently, request the HT500 hose upgrade when ordering. The HT500 takes 500°F intermittent.
