One unicell instead of two separate stages

On most precipitators the ionizer and the collection cell are separate components you pull, wash and reinstall separately. The SGN merges them. Parker calls it a single ESP unicell, and the practical effect is fewer pieces coming out of the cabinet on wash day at airflows where a smaller family would need three or four boxes.

The body is fully welded with toolless door latches and quick access to the motor and blower section. Parker builds it ducted or unducted, and it will machine mount, wall mount or ceiling hang depending on what your bay allows.

What you are really buying is a very low consumable bill in exchange for a wash schedule somebody has to keep. That trade is the whole conversation, and it should happen before a model number does.

The models

Three frame sizes, and then whether you take the blower

Parker builds the SGN on three frames. The frame sets your airflow band. Whether the unit ships with its own blower sets the weight, and on a ceiling hang the weight is usually the number that decides the job.

Read the two letter suffix and the list gets short. Parker’s key: the first letter is the inlet, the second is the blower. F is a Mist-Stop inlet, N is no inlet, P is a perforated inlet. B comes with a blower, X comes without. So an SGN221-FB is the 22 frame with a Mist-Stop inlet and a blower, and an SGN221-NX is the same frame bare, for when you are supplying your own fan or ducting into an existing system. T is the T-shape build.

The blower is worth 300 to 650 lbs. Compare SGN321 at 1,275 lbs with its blower against 625 lbs without. Parker’s catalog puts the family between 29 and 86 in. high, 51 and 53 in. wide, and 22 and 124 in. deep, so the depth is where the big builds grow. Both numbers are worth checking against your structure and your bay before the order rather than after.

Parker’s SGN order code is positional, and each position is a real choice about your installation rather than a catalog flourish. This is what sits behind that 62 figure, and it is why an SGN quote should name every position rather than a frame alone.

A part number like SGN221-FB34L reads as the 22 frame, Mist-Stop inlet, blower included, 3 hp, 460 volt, left to right. Parker’s power packs accept 90 to 130 VAC at 60 Hz; a unit ordered without a blower needs a 115 volt supply only, which is worth knowing before an electrician quotes the drop.

Airflow direction is not a detail. Left to right, right to left and center exhaust are different units, not a field adjustment. Get it wrong and the inlet faces the wall. It is the single most common thing to fix on a submittal, so we ask which way the duct comes in before anything else.

What comes in the box, and what gets added to it. Parker supplies the SGN complete with fully interlocked energy limiting UL recognized component power packs, mechanical prefilters, unicell construction, afterfilters, indicator lights and interlock switches. Three items are picked separately rather than assumed: the pulley drive set, the inlet collar in the diameter your duct actually is, and the drain loop trap or drain bottle. We put all three on the quote by name so the unit arrives able to run, instead of arriving and then needing a second order.

Media and filtration

Single, double or triple pass is the efficiency decision

Parker publishes efficiency at the line level rather than per model: a single pass SmogHog ESP removes up to 95% of 0.3 micron particles, with that figure independently verified in accordance with EN 1822-5. Adding passes raises it. The SGN and SHN brochure cites recirculation efficiencies up to 99% where the cleaned air comes back into the plant.

The stages are simple and mostly reusable. A mechanical prefilter takes the first load, either Mist-Stop coalescing or a perforated plate depending on how oily and how heavy your mist actually is. The unicell does the work. An afterfilter finishes the discharge. Nothing in that path is a consumable in normal service; the unicell washes and goes back in.

Parker’s published option list for the SGN is where a job gets tuned: application-specific power packs, dual polarity, high or low static pressure blowers, inlet and outlet plenums, odor control modules, motor starters, drain bottles and drain loop traps, and the single, double or triple pass cell arrangement. If your air returns to a space where people work all shift, that option list is where the conversation goes.

How the unicell gets cleaned

Parker’s SGN manual calls for wash water at 140 to 170 degrees F, not to exceed 180, with an alkaline detergent carrying a buffering agent to protect the aluminum. The recommended concentration is 5%, which is a 20 to 1 mix.

Do not mix caustic and alkaline detergents, and use nonflammable cleaners. Everything has to be dry before the unit runs again. A wet cell is a dead short, and that is the most common way a good collector comes back reading as broken.

How often

Parker gives a real interval on this family, which is unusual in the line: components should be cleaned on a one to three month interval, with where you land inside it set by the application.

That range is wide for a reason. A unit over a row of screw machines running straight oil all shift sits at the one month end. A unit over machines that run a few days a week sits at the three. We set your first interval from your hours and your coolant, then adjust it after the first two washes.

The thing worth saying plainly: if nobody owns that schedule, this is the wrong family and the media side of the line will serve you better. We would rather sell you the machine your crew will actually keep running.

Hanging it, and what you supply. Parker specifies half inch all threaded rod anchored to adequate roof trusses, with rod length kept to a minimum and 36 inches preferred. Allow 36 inches of clearance for door swing and component access, and 18 inches above for the electrical junction boxes. Units can be supported from underneath instead, with care taken on the drain connections and sump integrity. All SGN units carry a 1.5 inch FPT drain. Parker expects the main electrical starter with push button station, and the wiring to local and national code, to be supplied by the customer, so those go on our quote rather than turning up as a surprise at install.

A hard boundary

Charged plates and combustible material do not go together

Parker’s SGN manual is direct about it: do not collect emissions which are explosive, do not use in explosive atmospheres, and keep flammable materials and vapors such as gasoline away from the unit. We repeat that here rather than softening it.

Parker’s manual also carries this notice word for word: pursuant to National Fire Protection Agency standards, the owner or user is required to test their dust mixtures to evaluate and understand potential combustion or deflagration hazards that may exist.

NFPA 660 took effect January 1, 2026 and consolidated NFPA 61, 484, 652, 654, 655, and 664. NFPA 68 for venting and NFPA 69 for explosion prevention remain separate referenced standards. Your dust hazard analysis has to be reviewed at least every five years and whenever the process changes.

If any part of your process makes combustible dust, that process needs a dust collector engineered for it rather than a mist collector doing double duty. Metal grinding sits in this category more often than shops expect, and aluminum, magnesium, titanium and zirconium go to wet collection under NFPA 660’s stated preference.

Brazing, casting, cold forming, drilling, flame cutting, forging, gear cutting, grinding, heat treating, induction heating, lathes, milling, plastic and rubber forming, quenching, screw machining, soldering, threading, vacuum pumps, welding, wet grinding, and wire drawing.

Parker’s own catalog files the SGN against mist, smoke and wet particulate, and lists it as both a ceiling mount and a direct mount ESP. That combination is the tell: this is the machine you reach for when several sources feed one collector, or when one large source produces more than a machine mount can carry.

On our floors it lands most often in machining, tooling and CNC where a row of spindles ducts to one unit, in welding and metal fabrication on oily or coated stock, and in aerospace manufacturing, where mist carryover shows up as a quality problem before anybody calls it an air quality problem.

When the SGN is not right for you

Nobody is going to wash the unicell

Parker gives a one to three month interval, which means somebody owns that date. An electrostatic collector that never gets cleaned is an expensive fan. If your PM program is already stretched, the media side of the line asks less of your crew and we will price that instead.

One machine is the whole problem

The SGN starts at 2,200 CFM. If the mist is coming off a single CNC enclosure, this is more machine and more installation than the job needs. The MSH machine mount sits on the machine, runs on single phase, and costs a fraction of the install.

You are between about 1,000 and 2,200 CFM

That band belongs to the SHN, which runs from 1,000 CFM up to about 5,500 and hangs in more places. Where the two families overlap we compare them honestly on your numbers rather than defaulting to the bigger one.

Your contaminant is dry dust

Your roof will not take it

An SGN322 is 1,900 pounds hanging from your structure on half inch rod. If the building will not carry it, that is a real constraint and it is better found now. A bottom supported install is often the answer, and we check the structure during the assessment rather than at the lift.
