SmogHog SHM Floor Mount Media Mist Collector

The media answer scaled up and set on the floor. One machining center or a whole row of them ducted into a single collector, with PEACH coalescing media that drains what it catches and a touchscreen at eye level instead of a gauge somebody has to climb to read.

At a glance

Self contained, ducted, and readable from the floor

SmogHog builds the SHM Floor as a self contained cabinet that connects to a single machining center, or to several machines through a properly designed leak proof duct system. That second sentence is the whole reason this machine exists rather than putting a mount on every enclosure.

Inside it is the same PEACH coalescing media as the machine mount: an open three dimensional depth matrix that lets mist saturate through the media, coalesce into droplets, and drain by gravity while the differential pressure stays low.

What changes at this size is the controls. A touchscreen HMI in a separate control box mounted on the side of the cabinet puts filter loading and airflow at floor level, which on an 87 inch tall unit is not a small thing.

The models

Nine builds, and the last digit is the blower count

SmogHog publishes nine orderable SHM Floor builds. The pattern worth knowing is that horsepower moves in blocks of 5.8, one block per blower unit, and the last digit of the model tracks it. Everything else about the build is cabinet size and media count.

Two builds at the same airflow are not the same machine. SHM-121 and SHM-211 both move 2,000 CFM on 5.8 hp, and SHM-122 and SHM-212 both move 3,000 on 11.6. What differs is the cabinet, and therefore the media count and the footprint. SmogHog publishes the family at 87.8 in. high, with the width at 28.5, 57 or 85.5 in. and the depth at 30.1 or 51.5 in. Which one fits depends on the aisle you have, not on the airflow.

Media count is the service story. SmogHog publishes builds carrying 4, 8, 12, 16 or 24 PEACH elements. More elements at the same airflow means lower face velocity, longer life, and a bigger box. That is a real trade and it is worth having on the table before the model gets picked, because the cheapest cabinet is rarely the cheapest machine to run.

What you choose

The collector is one line. The system is the rest.

SmogHog orders the main media, the afterfilter and the connection hardware as their own line items. On a ducted unit that is the right structure, because the duct is where the job succeeds or fails.

Duct designSingle machine, or multiple machines on one leak proof systemWhether the machine ever reaches its rating

SmogHog says leak proof for a reason. A ducted mist system that leaks does not fail loudly. It just never quite pulls at the far machine, and everybody blames the collector. Duct sizing, transport velocity and joint sealing decide whether a 4,800 CFM unit behaves like one. That work belongs in the design, and it is the part of the job we go through with you before anything gets quoted.

The HMI is worth using. Filter loading, airflow and status sit on a touchscreen in a control box on the side of the cabinet. It only helps if somebody looks at it, so on a multi machine system we work out the loading targets with you as part of startup support and give your maintenance lead the number to watch rather than a manual.

Media and filtration

Coalesce, drain, and keep the pressure drop low

PEACH media is a synthetic blend designed specifically for capturing and draining oil mist and coolant. The multi layer structure is thermally bonded in a gradient density so the media stays strong but open while it runs, which is what produces the combination SmogHog is after: high efficiency, extended service life and low pressure loss.

The behavior matters more than the specification. A media that only captures will eventually blind and take your airflow with it. A media that captures, coalesces and drains sheds the liquid it collects and holds its pressure drop through the service interval. On coalescing cartridges SmogHog publishes an operating differential pressure band of roughly 0.75 to 4 in. w.c., and the top of that band is your change point rather than a date.

Behind the main media, a 95% DOP afterfilter or HEPA finishes the discharge. Where the cleaned air returns into the shop and people work near it all shift, HEPA is the honest choice. Where it exhausts or the bay has strong general ventilation, usually it is not.

Cleaning and ownership

Filter changes on a schedule your crew can actually keep

What maintenance looks like

You watch differential pressure on the HMI and you change media when it rises to the target. There is no soak tank, no wash water temperature to get right, no dry time before the unit can run again, and no high voltage components to keep dry.

In exchange, media is a recurring purchase, and on a 24 element build that is a real line in the budget. That is the honest trade, and it is why both families exist in the SmogHog line.

Which side you should be on

If your maintenance team is stretched, or the collector serves several machines and downtime on it stops more than one spindle, media wins. A filter change is predictable and anybody can do it.

If you have a real PM program and somebody who owns the schedule, the electrostatic SHN or SGN has almost no consumable spend and will cost less to own across years.

We ask about your PM program before we ask about your airflow, because that answer decides the family long before it decides the model.

Size the media, not just the fan. Two builds can move the same air with very different element counts. The one with more media costs more up front and less every year after, because face velocity drops and elements last longer. On a unit serving a whole row of machines, that difference usually pays for itself well inside the first media cycle.

A hard boundary

A mist collector is not a combustible dust answer

Media or electrostatic, the boundary is the same. If any part of your process makes combustible dust, that process needs a dust collector designed for it rather than a mist collector doing double duty. SmogHog’s manuals carry a combustible dust notice requiring the owner or user to test their dust mixtures to evaluate and understand potential combustion or deflagration hazards that may exist.

NFPA 660 took effect January 1, 2026 and consolidated NFPA 61, 484, 652, 654, 655, and 664. NFPA 68 for venting and NFPA 69 for explosion prevention remain separate referenced standards. Your dust hazard analysis has to be reviewed at least every five years and whenever the process changes.

This matters more on a ducted system than on a machine mount, because one duct can quietly pick up a process nobody told you about. Metal grinding sits in the combustible category more often than shops expect, and for aluminum, magnesium, titanium and zirconium wet collection is the preferred approach under NFPA 660 and what we recommend, with outdoor dry collection as the recognized alternative. Adding a machine to an existing mist duct is a change of process, and it deserves the same look the original design got.

What it is built for

Mist, smoke and wet particulate, one machine or many

SmogHog files the SHM Floor against mist, smoke and wet particulate, and describes it as connectable to a single machining center or to multiple machines through a properly designed leak proof duct system. That range is what makes it the workhorse on the media side of the line.

It lands most often in machining, tooling and CNC where a cell or a row of machines feeds one collector, and in aerospace manufacturing where mist carryover turns into a surface finish problem before anyone files an air quality complaint.

It is also the usual answer for a shop that wants central collection but has already decided a wash routine is not going to happen. Central does not have to mean electrostatic.

Fit check

When the SHM Floor is not right for you

One machine is the whole problem

A floor unit plus duct is more machine and more installation than a single enclosure needs. The SHM machine mount sits on the machine and covers 300 to 800 CFM for a fraction of the install.

You want the lowest operating cost and you can keep a schedule

Media is a recurring purchase, and on a 24 element build it is a meaningful one. If you have a maintenance program that will genuinely keep a wash schedule, the SGN covers similar airflow with almost no consumable spend.

Nobody is going to design the duct properly

SmogHog’s own wording is a properly designed leak proof duct system. A multi machine mist system on undersized or leaky duct will underperform no matter which collector is on the end of it, and it will look like the collector’s fault. If duct work is not in the budget, a machine mount per machine is the more honest plan.

Your contaminant is dry dust

Coalescing media is built to catch a liquid and drain it. Dry grinding or sanding dust loads it without draining, which is the fastest way to spend money on media. See the DustHog line.

You do not have the height or the floor space

SmogHog publishes the family at 87.8 in. tall, up to 85.5 in. wide and up to 51.5 in. deep. Add door swing and media pull clearance to that. We go through the footprint with you during the assessment rather than at the delivery.

SHM Floor questions

How much air does it move?

SmogHog publishes nine builds from 1,500 CFM on the SHM-111 up to 7,200 CFM on the SHM-324. Motor horsepower moves in blocks of 5.8, one block per blower unit, so a 7,200 CFM build runs 23.2 hp.

Can it serve more than one machine?

Yes, and that is the main reason to choose it. SmogHog describes the unit as connectable to a single machining center or to multiple machines through a properly designed leak proof duct system. The duct design is what decides whether it performs.

Why do two models move the same air?

Because the cabinet differs. SHM-121 and SHM-211 both move 2,000 CFM on 5.8 hp but come in different footprints with different media counts. Which one is right depends on the space you have and how long you want media to last.

What is PEACH media?

A coalescing filter with an open three dimensional depth matrix. Mist saturates through the depth of the media, droplets grow until they are heavy enough, then drain out with gravity while the differential pressure stays low. It is a synthetic blend built specifically for oil mist and coolant.

How do I know when to change media?

By differential pressure rather than by date. The HMI touchscreen on the side of the cabinet shows filter loading, and on coalescing cartridges SmogHog publishes an operating band of roughly 0.75 to 4 in. w.c. We work out the change point with you as part of startup support so your team has a number rather than a manual.

Are the filters and connections part of the unit price?

They are separate line items by design, which is how the collector gets matched to your duct and your discharge requirement. Main media, afterfilter and inlet connections all get named on our quote alongside the unit.

What power does it need?

Three phase at 460 volts as standard, with 230 volt three phase available. Horsepower runs from 5.8 on a single blower build up to 23.2 on the largest.
